Our always popular East Coast tour promises an amazing selection of wonderful gardens to wander through and enjoy, with each having their own special personality and ambience. With breathtaking scenery, a delicious lunch at The Store and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean need we say more. We have a special treat for you at the historic Oak Tree Cottage that will top off a very exciting day.
Oak Tree Cottage – Russell and Nicola Kerslake.
Russell and Nicola Kerslake welcome you to Oak Tree Cottage. Step back in time where you can sit relax and enjoy an authentic Devonshire Tea in a setting of yesteryear.
Nestled under established Oak Trees and amongst cottage gardens, Oak Tree Cottage enjoys a peaceful rural setting in the heart of the Awatere Valley. Just feel the history oozing from this old Cobb Cottage (Est.1874) which has been lovingly restored as a family home and teahouse.
London Hill – Dennis and Barbara Burkhart.
Nestled in the historically famous Flaxbourne area, London Hill Gardens enjoy a majestic view over Lake Elterwater to Tapuae O Uenuku which is the highest peak in the Kaikouras, and, the highest peak in NZ outside the Mt Cook chain. Mature native and introduced trees frame the upper level of the garden giving way to meandering pathways along the lower levels. Boasting both formal and informal gardens; roses, catmint and lavender scent your path.
Barewood – Joe and Carolyn Ferraby.
A classic potager features at Barewood, with brick paths framed by box and lavender dividing beds of soft fruits, vegetables and flowers. Old-fashioned apples and pears are espaliered on iron arches. This garden has been planted to complement the century-old homestead with rambling roses encircling the veranda, and clambering over brick walls. Plant connoisseurs will find much to love and inspire.
Winterhome – Richard and Sue Macfarlane.
Winterhome features long vistas with secrets unfolding at every turn. Wonderful mass plantings, including Mediterranean-type plants thrive on this East Coast property. This garden is structured and planted to have year-round appeal, and enhance the sensational Pacific Ocean views. The garden avoids current fashion trends giving it an agelessness that truly reflects the personality and the passion of those who tend it.
Ha He Naca – Hans and Helen Van der Meulen
Nestles amongst the grapes of the Awatere Valley lies Ha He Naca surrounded by conifer hedges this traditional garden filled with iceberg roses, hydrangeas, paeonies, French lavender, hellebores and camellias. Also featured are many mature trees such as huge Californian Redwoods, Walnut and spectacular Weeping Elm all providing a brilliant backdrop to this particularly tranquil garden.
