JOHN PATRICK
John Patrick is a Landscape
Architect who runs a practice of 17
landscape architects in Melbourne,
Australia. John arrived in Australia
in 1980 and was Senior Lecturer
at Burnley College University of
Melbourne from 1980 to 1988. He
founded Australia’s Open Garden
Scheme in 1986 and has since
developed Melbourne’s Design
Fest, a major charity event in which
Melbourne’s Garden Designers
open their work for children’s
charities.
John was a presenter on Burke’s
Backyard for many years and
currently presents ABC’s
Gardening Australia. He has
written nine books and his new
book Contemporary Australian
Garden Design written with Jenny
Wade is to be published in October
2008. He leads garden tours to
Europe every year and earlier this
year made his first venture to visit
gardens in Japan.
Projects undertaken by his office
include Sydney Street Colour for
the 2000 Olympics, restoration
of gardens at Government
House, Melbourne, master plans
and heritage studies for many of Melbourne’s notable parks
including Fitzroy Gardens,
Caulfield Park and Melbourne’s
Domain, hospitals, schools,
domestic gardens etc..
He has spoken at conferences
around the world including many
talks in New Zealand and has
been a judge at garden shows in
Australia, Singapore and at the
Ellerslie Flower Show.
In Marlborough John will speak
about designing town gardens
basing his talk on his own work and
that of colleagues around Australia
and giving an overview of gardens
that have brought him pleasure in
his recent tours. This will include
glimpses of gardens in France, Italy,
Japan and Australia.
