URBAN FRUIT PRODUCTION
"Back By Popular Demand"
JOHN PENNY
Fruit Trees for Containers and Small Gardens
Few gardeners will deny the great
pleasure
to be gained
from eating sun
ripened fruit.
John has been a teacher, a
landscaper, a nursery manager and
producer of new plants to New
Zealand gardeners. He currently
works at Waimea Nurseries, with
one of his tasks advancing this
concept of urban fruit production.
He lives on a lifestyle block with
a newly planted home orchard
of over 150 trees and is currently
developing a very large potager
surrounded by espaliered fruit trees,
while also incorporating many fruit
varieties into this kitchen garden.
These two workshops are about
ways of growing fruit successfully.
More specifically “urban fruit
production” involves maximising
growing opportunities in areas
where space is limited while at the
same time creating plants that are
aesthetically pleasing. As such
it means making right buying
selections and taking charge of your trees shape, size and good health.
These topics will be covered along
with how to espalier and how to
grow fruit successfully in containers.
They are intended to help home
gardeners, landscapers and garden
designers incorporate fruiting plants
in their landscape plans and potager
designs. Both workshops will cover
similar topics but one is designed
for those with limited knowledge
while the other is geared towards
those that have a good basic
knowledge of fruit trees. Some
practical demonstrations and notes
will be provided.
